South Africa APS Benchmark

BANKING & FINTECH USER SATISFACTION BENCHMARK SCORE (APS)

The APS Score benchmark sets the bar for an app to stand out from its competitors, based on qualitative user satisfaction surveys.

Market Leaders

GOTYME BANK ZA (TYMEBANK) led the ranking with an APS score of 87.6, narrowly ahead of METATRADER 5 at 87.4. Both reached the High-Performer Zone, associated with very high satisfaction and trust. Their proximity makes this a closely matched result; the scores alone do not establish a meaningful statistical difference.

ABSA BANKING APP ranked third, reaching the benchmark noted above and earning a Strong classification, associated with high satisfaction, engagement, loyalty and recommendability. The leading pair’s separation from third place suggests that reaching a strong standard still leaves room to improve the experience further.

Market Overview

South Africa’s banking and fintech apps have earned considerable enthusiasm, but consistent satisfaction remains a challenge. The October 2026 APS from Cassuarina Labs survey covered 20 apps and analyzed more than 9873 valid responses. The country’s average App Pulse Score© was 53 out of 100, placing it in the Moderate Zone: a stable but undistinguished level of perception, with positive experiences offset by meaningful friction.

Across the apps analyzed, survey results show that 61.7% of respondents’ qualitative feedback fell into “Love It,” the 81–100 band. At the other end, 24.0% fell into “Frustrated,” scoring 0–20, and 3.9% into “Very disappointed,” scoring 21–40. The remaining 10.4% reflected intermediate experiences, ranging from disappointment to liking an app without loving it. This distribution reveals a divided experience: strong enthusiasm can coexist with substantial dissatisfaction, making consistency a more useful product priority than adding features alone.

The survey’s comparison benchmarks set a clearer target for stronger performance: an APS score of 76.2, a FANS share of 79%, and a CRITICS share of 10%. Product teams should treat these as complementary measures—building enthusiasm while containing negative experiences. A persuasive growth story needs both.

Key Lessons

  • Make updates earn their place. Test redesigned journeys against familiar tasks, readability and device compatibility before release.

  • Keep banking one tap ahead of selling. Remove promotional interruptions from balances, payments and account access.

  • Make transaction status unambiguous. Align payment confirmations, balances, notifications and downloadable receipts.

  • Design access for real conditions. Support constrained connectivity and simplify device changes, biometrics and password recovery.

  • Give support ownership of resolution. Provide a clear route to a capable person without repeated menus or handoffs.
